STEPHENS CHAPEL; Funeral services for Mr. Bennie "Joe" Posey will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 12, 2022 at John E. Stephens Chapel. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10 AM till time for service Saturday, March 12, 2022 at John E. Stephens Chapel. John E. Stephens Chapel Funeral Services is in charge of local arrangements. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at Williams Southside Chapel for Mr. Bennie “Joe” Posey, age 89, of Southside, AL, who passed away on Wednesday, March 2, 2022. Cohen Ezelle and Jay Benefield will officiate the service. Burial will be at Bethsaida Baptist Church Cemetery in Philadelphia, MS. Williams Southside Funeral Home will direct. On January 6, 1933, in Philadelphia, Mississippi, a baby boy was born at home in the Tucker community to a farmer, Thomas Martin Posey and his lovely wife, Lora Etta. He was named Bennie “Joe” Posey. Joe was a bit younger than his four siblings. His sister Zanie had married, and his three older brothers, Audell, Clive, and Pat, whom he admired, volunteered for military service during World War II. One day at the young age of seventeen, Joe declared emphatically that he had to get away from those cotton fields! Just looking at the cotton made his back ache, so he went to the Army recruiting office and volunteered. Of course, his mama had to give her written permission since he was under the legal age to sign up. While stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, Joe met a beautiful young lady working on base in the PX. Her name was Marty Meck. They had a whirlwind romance, and were married shortly before he was sent to Germany. Marty later joined him in Germany. They soon had two boys, Guy Douglas and Gary Joe Posey. Joe served his country well with stents in South Korea, Germany, and in Vietnam where he served in military intelligence. He received numerous awards through the years, most notably a bronze star, and proudly retired after over 21 years of service to his country. Joe moved on to a successful career in security. When he retired from work, he enjoyed spending his time with his family and friends and creating in his woodworking shop. He was a fun, quick-witted man with a positive attitude and was loved by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by Marty Posey, his beloved wife of 61 wonderful years, his second-born son, Gary Joe Posey, his parents, Thomas Martin and Lora Etta Posey, two brothers, William Audell Posey and Thomas Clive Posey, also one sister, Zanie Posey Jayroe. He is is survived by his son, Guy (Tina Marie) Posey, two grandsons, Jeremy Posey and Christopher (Samantha) Posey, one granddaughter, Liana Posey, six great-grandchildren, Ava, Ansley, Amilia, Rowan, Sophia, and Briar Posey, one brother, AP “Pat” (Milbur) Posey, and one sister-in-law, Donna Meck, plus a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at Williams Southside Funeral Home.
